Critical shortage after 20% drop in donations post-Thanksgiving; Type O blood in highest demand
CONNECTICUT – Connecticut Blood Center (CTBC) has declared a blood emergency following a more than 20% decline in donations after Thanksgiving, leaving the community’s blood supply critically low during one of the most critical times of the year. CTBC is urgently appealing for donations of all blood types, particularly Type O, which is vital for trauma and emergency care.
The holiday season is historically a challenging period for blood donations, as family gatherings, travel, and busy schedules cause a significant drop in donor turnout. At the same time, the demand for blood often rises due to an increase in travel-related accidents, routine surgeries, and other emergencies.
“Every year, we brace for a dip in donations around the holidays, but the need for blood doesn’t slow down,” said Jonathan DeCasanova, Account Manager – Community Relations at Connecticut Blood Center. “Our community relies on a steady flow of donors to keep our hospitals supplied, and we’re calling on everyone who is eligible to make blood donation part of their holiday tradition. It’s among the most meaningful gifts you can give.”
Local hospital leaders are also sounding the alarm, underscoring the critical role of blood donations during this time of year. “Traditionally, the holiday season brings with it a critical blood shortage, as even our most reliable donors get caught up in the hectic whirlwind of parties, family, friends and traditions,” said Dr. Bradford Sherbourne, Medical Director of Hartford Hospital Laboratories. “That is why we are asking everyone to donate blood to kick off the holiday season by giving the greatest gift. It doesn’t cost anything, and you probably won’t know the recipient of your gift, but it’s the surest way to capture the spirit of love and warmth we all so want to feel this time of year.”
CTBC encourages new and returning donors to schedule an appointment and prioritize blood donation this holiday season. Blood donors can give every 56 days. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions.
